sugar cane / stick and sword / guns are ... those that go back hundreds of years
How about an iPod or a cane reed with GPS ... even might get a LoJack on it in case someone steals
The rods are used mainly by older people in the world today. I think some kinds of medical devices would be more useful, like one of those "Help, I am pleased and can not get up kind of thing. If the technology is good enough, maybe we could use the tube to see () through the handle of your blood glucose, oxygen, etc.
